I was once a bartender. I was pretty sure I’d be a good bartender because before that I was a kindergarten teacher. There is a lot of overlap in skills necessary to do both and do them well.
Regular bar patrons and kindergarteners have a lot in common. Like:
They always have a story to tell
Still learning how to use an inside voice
They have questionable decision making skills
Sometimes they throw up
Need supervision
Just want to be seen and feel like they matter
By the time I wanted to become a parent, I was pretty sure I’d be a great mom. I already had SO much experience!
What folly!
Parenthood follows the classic This American Life formula: This thing happened. And then another thing happened. I thought it was going to be like this. And it was nothing like that at all.
Over the weekend, I was honored to share a story about motherhood and bartending at a Mama-themed storytelling event hosted by dear friend,
, which I now present to you.And paid subscribers: scroll to the bottom for a mama-themed playlist that is nothing like Baby Shark.
