I was once a bartender. I was pretty sure I’d be a good bartender because before that I was a kindergarten teacher. There is a lot of overlap in skills necessary to do both and do them well.

Regular bar patrons and kindergarteners have a lot in common. Like:

  • They always have a story to tell

  • Still learning how to use an inside voice

  • They have questionable decision making skills

  • Sometimes they throw up

  • Need supervision

  • Just want to be seen and feel like they matter

By the time I wanted to become a parent, I was pretty sure I’d be a great mom. I already had SO much experience!

What folly!

Parenthood follows the classic This American Life formula: This thing happened. And then another thing happened. I thought it was going to be like this. And it was nothing like that at all.

Over the weekend, I was honored to share a story about motherhood and bartending at a Mama-themed storytelling event hosted by dear friend,

Lady Brain by Casey Gates Frey
, which I now present to you.

And paid subscribers: scroll to the bottom for a mama-themed playlist that is nothing like Baby Shark.
